You have planned your dream wine country wedding in Paso Robles or Santa Barbara. You have the perfect dress, the perfect venue and of course the perfect life partner. Don’t stop there. Make sure you plan your makeup too. There are a lot of dos and don’ts when it comes to your wedding makeup. I’ve listed my top five and why they are important when it comes to making you look your best on your special day.
Do Have a Makeup Trial
For reasons I explain in my post on 3 reasons a wedding makeup trial is important, this is a key step to planning your big day. It may seem like an unnecessary expense. Unless you have an existing relationship with your makeup artist, or you really don’t care what you’re makeup is going to look like, I highly recommend a makeup trial.
Do Drink Plenty of Water
Our skin is our biggest vital organ and the dermis is comprised of about 75% water. While we should be drinking 2-3 liters of water, or similar hydrating liquid a day, most people don’t drink enough fluids. My suggestion is to up your water intake two weeks before your wedding day and aim to drink 2 liters of water a day. You may not know this but the first sign of dehydration is hunger. So, drinking more water will reduce your food cravings and may actually help you maintain your weight before your wedding day. Not only that, you will likely be too busy to drink enough water on your big day and you may perspire more than usual due to stress. Your body will handle that and the champagne you’re likely to have a lot better if you’re starting from a place of hydration. Hydrate. Hydrate. Hydrate.
Don’t Wear Too Much Shimmer.
While shimmer and dewy style makeup has been the rage for a few years now, too much shimmer can make the skin look old by gathering in the creases and drawing attention to aging indications such as larger pores, crows feet, droopy eyelids, etc. Be very cautious as to where and how much shimmer is applied
Don’t Expect to Look Exactly Like Your Inspo Photo(s)
One thing to keep in mind about all these fabulous makeup looks you see on Instagram is that hours of planning and production go into these looks. The models are chosen for the specific look the artist is creating. The models are often 18 to 25 years old and are chosen for their youthful, smooth near flawless skin. The photographers are using professional lighting and camera equipment. And, even if you see what looks like natural pores on the model’s skin, invariably these photos are heavily photoshopped. Further, the looks you want may not be appropriate for your age, eye shape, eye lid type, etc. For example, not everyone looks good in wing liner (nor is it really appropriate for a wedding). Consider your inspo photos a rough blueprint and heed to your makeup artists suggestions.
Don’t Drink or Eat Salty Food The Night Before Your Wedding
I know you’re in a celebratory mood and a bit anxious, but drinking alcohol and eating salty foods will both bloat and dehydrate you. You want your skin hydrated
Don’t Try A Beauty Product You’ve Never Used The Night Before Your Big Day
It’s tempting to decide to give yourself a mini facial, maybe do a drugstore brand peel or mask the night before your big day while you relax in a warm bath, but if you’ve never tried the product before your plan may backfire. Particularly during stressful times, your skin can become extra sensitive. You may react to a fragrance or an ingredient like alpha hydroxy acid and cause yourself to have a rash, peeling skin, or even a mild burn. If you’re going to do a spa treatment, professional or at home, the day before your wedding, make sure you have used those exact products before and don’t add any new services or products to your regime.
